Adoption Respite

free in-home respite care for adoptive parents in salt lake county

Utah Adoption Respite Child Care

Adoption Respite is a unique in-home respite service provided for FREE to Salt Lake County parents who have adopted through DCFS or an equivalent Utah adoption agency.

Across the country, adoption respite services have grown in popularity as a means to help support adoptive parents and their children to become stronger, healthier families. Qualified and trauma-informed caretakers are specifically trained to meet the varied needs of children who’ve come from foster programs and adoption agencies.

Our on-site Crisis Nurseries are open to all parents and caregivers, providing a supportive environment. In contrast, our in-home Adoption Respite Care program is tailored specifically for adoptive caregivers including any and all children under their care. This program offers them a valuable opportunity to take a few hours for errands, attend legal appointments, or simply unwind and destress in the midst of the new challenges of parenthood.

Benefits of Adoption Respite

Adoption Respite is a preventative service intended to help adoptive parents and caregivers maintain their mental well-being so they may continue to be the same nurturing, loving parents for years to come.

Like other services provided by Family Support Center, our Adoption Respite targets the root causes of stress in the home rather than just treating the symptoms. Sometimes just knowing you have support can make all the difference.

Benefits and strengths of an Adoption Respite specialist include:

  • Understanding the unique and special needs that accompany the adoption process

  • An in-home parenting resource for both new and long-time guardians

  • Certified in trauma-informed activities, communication, and positive guidance

Importance of Post-Adoption Services

  • Family Support Center’s Adoption Respite is one of many resources partnering with local adoption agencies in Salt Lake County designed to support newly adoptive parents in one of the most extraordinary, yet challenging, journeys of their lives.

  • Of the 135,000 children adopted annually each year 59% are from child welfare or the foster system, 26% are from other countries, and 15% are voluntarily relinquished from their parents or guardians. Each of these children will grow to have similar yet uniquely different needs. Our Adoption Respite specialist receives the most updated trauma-informed training to assist parents.

  • A recent report of Discontinuity and Disruption in Adoptions and Guardianships published by ChildWelfare.gov reports that “adoptions experience discontinuity due to a combination of risk and protective factors rather than a single cause,” such as, “child, parent, and systemic factors.”
